Being a tad (or actually incredibly) vain myself, I do know the feeling of accomplishment when you let go of coolness and just go with what feels nice :) Hooray for shedding hipsterdom!

Re: Wolverines and Bees

I kind of imagined that to keep bees you just had to put them in boxes, make sure they're collecting pollen and not dying, and then spray them with that fog stuff and take the honey when it's ready. Unsurprisingly, it's a lot more complicated than that, because the way bee society operates is complicated. Apparently, a main duty of the beekeeper is to make sure the bees don't "swarm." Swarming = half of the bees leaving the hive completely to start a new one. From what I can tell, the bees do this if they're not happy with the queen, or feeling crowded. So the beekeeper has to watch for signs of swarming, like the creation of new queen cells. How they prevent things from escalating after catching these signs, exactly, I don't know yet. Crazy stuff!

The Florida Museum sounds cool. I've actually never been to Tallahassee and probably "should" since it's the capital of the state in which I vote.

Re: Wolverines and Bees

Hah! This is particularly funny to me because I just bought "Bay Area Blend" honey from the Farmer's Market. I agree though, it somehow feels like something that is a direct connection to the place where it was created. Also, I have super romantic ideas about beekeeping, and would love to hear more about the assuredly less romantic realities of it.

My favorite "zoo" is in kind of a random hole -- it's the Florida Museum in Tallahassee, FL (locally known as the "junior museum" though I don't remember why.) It is a rescue of local animals and it has the biggest enclosures of any zoo I've ever been to. In fact, they're not really enclosures...it's all build around a giant cypress swamp and there are some chainlink fences and nets to keep predator and prey apart by and large everyone is living au natural. Going in the morning helps to see all the beasties in their frisky states. The Sonoran Desert Museum in Arizona is also one of the better large-enclosure museums I've been to. Now I'll add Norden's Ark of my list of acceptable 'zoos' to visit.

Good job being the only PoPer to not pathetically suck at our restart. To misquote Miss O'Hara, "next Monday is another day."

Re: Bodies

Most Honourable Respected Sir/Madam
I have the honour to invite your kind attention towards my miserable circumstances
and seeking your help.
With best regards it is stated that I am an old man of 59 years
from Karachi Pakistan. I couldn't find your email so I'm responding here.Your blog is very engaging. I've been living in Gothenburg since 2006 and I'd be happy to meet up for coffee. When you move to a new country with a partner, you start off with their friends. There comes a time when you have to make your own! I'm down with that. I mean, I don't even like Lady Gaga but I heard an accapella recording of her recently and was surprised to find she has an amazing and powerful voice (which is a lot more than one can say for Madonna and I LIKE Madonna) when it's not filtered and messed with, Ms. Paglia should do some research before she says such nonsense

Also, just because people communicate in a different way doesn't mean they are not communicating - it's just that Paglia doesn't understand the mode of communication. It's as ignorant as an Austrian saying that Japanese people don't communicate because they speak indirectly when in fact it only seems that way because they don't see the subtleties inderlying the body language and tone of voice, for example.

It's ironic that someone who was at the forefront of feminist theory has retreated to the tired old bastion of "things were different in my day."

PS: All the posts seem to be expanding fine now ^_^

Re: Back in Gothenburg

Thanks for stopping by, Sasa! It is a skill that is hard to find, I think in part because it is so easy to communicate only in the format in which you are most comfortable. Garrulous children can succeed at oral reports and social niceties while writers can conduct their entire lives as digital penpals. I don't have an opinion about this, merely an observation...an opinion and a hypothesis with no normative conclusion. I think a lot of commentators have lost the idea of just noting a trend without having to criticize and denounce it. So technology has changed our lives. You can report on this without having to wrap it all up in a tiny concluding paragraph. Wait...I'm criticizing critics for being critical...there's probably something wrong with that.

By the by, you were totally on time in EST, so no worries!

Re: Idyll Interrupted

I am having a really hard time leaving you a comment and already lost it once. The first thing that springs to mind is HBO's "True Blood." I love the show, but I don't have a tv, much less cable, much less premium cable. Either I can just sit around and wait for each season's DVD (back to: I don't own a TV, or a DVD/BluRay, or a Netflix subscription) which probably means I won't ever get around to watching it, and I won't get to participate in the social conversation around it. But HBO doesn't post the eps online, and doesn't sell through iTunes or any other venue I can find. So I stream or torrent it and HBO never sees any revenue from me. I'd pay $2.99/ep or whatever, but no one will sell it to me. In general, I actually see a lot of "illegal downloading" as an expression of the failure of the "free market system" to accomodate people's demands.

p.s. I never thought I'd say this, but your comments feature is IE unfriendly.

Re: Things & Things Mix Five: Sommar

@Malin: Cool!
